tropismes [2006] Galerie Thérèse Dion Multimedia installation & photographs September 9 to 30, 2006 Galerie Thérèse Dion presents Tropismes, a solo exhibition by Josée Pedneault, one of the gallery's newest artists. For the exhibition, Galerie Thérese Dion is transformed into an immersive environment, in which an installation with multiple projectors invites the viewer on a journey. A series of photographs complements the exhibition. Josée Pedneault's art practice is centered around a database composed of photographs, videos and sounds collected from her personal experiences. Tropism is an involuntary response of an organism - plant or animal - towards an environmental stimulus such as gravity or light. It is by referring to this biological phenomenon that the artist, at a specific moment in her personal history, finds a natural inclination to certain items from her personal visual database. In the installation Tropismes, Josée Pedneault partially uses randomness as a mode of presentation. So doing, she confuses expectations, upsetting the usual order of things. The work builds meaning through a fortuitous web of significations, a network of relations between the work's many components and the imagination, sensitivity and memory of each individual viewer. The installation Tropismes, which can be experienced metaphorically as a walk, unfolds in a poetic narration, a contemplative wandering. |
